WEEK 5 – 29th September

7.1 Lesson 4 Where I live – Choosing Colours and Fonts

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In today’s lesson you will learn how to;

  • Understand that font style, size and colour can change the meaning of a presentation
  • Evaluate the effects of fonts and colour on a presentation

STARTER – Choosing fonts

Grab a white board, pen and cloth.  Work in pairs.

  1. Look at slide 1 – Choosing fonts.  Which font do you prefer and why?
  2. Look at slide 2 – Choosing fonts.  Different styles are appropriate for different purposes.  Which font would be appropriate for each task?  You can use the same font more than once.

What ever your personal preference for colour, font, etc, it is important that your presentation has “consistency” – the same fonts and background throughout the document to make it clear, easy to read and professional looking

Task 1 Improving Shep’s Presentation

  1. Watch Shep’s Presentation (Reso4b).  Work in pairs.  Jot down on your white boards at least five changes that you would make the presentation better.  Think about the font, background and pictures.
  2. Watch Shep’s Improved Presentation (Reso4c).  On your white boards jot down as many reasons as you can think of to explain why this presentation is better.  Think about the font, background and layout

Task 2 Adding Text to your Presentation

The key purpose of adding text to your presentation is to convince people that your town is a great place to live – be persuasive.  REMEMBER: your text needs to appeal to all of the family!

  1. To add text to a slide, click into the text box and start typing
  2. To add a text box to a slide, click on the text box icon, click on the slide where you want the text box to be and start typing

You should not use more than two fonts in your presentation.  Add interest by using BOLD, ITALIC and UNDERLINE

  1. To add further effects to text, chose Format / Font.

Do not get carried away adding text.  The GOLDEN RULE is no more than 5 lines of text with no more than 6 words per line – that’s 30 words – be concise.

Task 3 Slide Transition

Watch the following video to add slide transition to your presentation.  (Slide Show / Slide Transition).  No more than 2 types of slide transition – one for  title and conclusion slide and one for all of the other slides.

Task 4 Text and Image Animation

Watch the following video to add text animation to your presentation.  ( Slide Show / Animation Schemes or Custom Animation).  Use only one type of text animation.  You can use another type for your images.

Task 5 Adding a Colour Scheme to your Presentation

Read through Colour Rules (Reso4e).  You should choose contrasting colours for the text and background (e.g. blue background and yellow text) to make it easy to read.  The colour scheme you choose should be applied to all of your slides

  1. To add one colour background, choose Format / Background – use the drop down arrow and More Colours to see the whole selection.
  2. To add a gradient background, choose Format / Background – use the drop down arrow and Fill Effects.  You can choose Colour 1 and Colour 2 and you can change the ay the colours mix by clicking Shading styles and Variants
  3. To use a pre-designed template, choose Format / Slide Design, click on the different Design Templates to preview them.

TEST YOURSELF – 2 Stars and 1 Wish

Work in your pairs.  Show your partner the formatting choices you have made.  Constructive criticisms – share you thoughts with your partner, but be mindful of their feelings.  What features do you like?  What features don’t your like? Tactfully suggest one improvement!
