WEEK 10 – 10th November

9.1 Lesson 10 Mayhem Manor: Designing a Poster.

WEEK 11 – 17th  November

9.1 Lesson 11 Mayhem Manor: Designing a Poster.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In today’s lesson you will learn how to;

  • Create posters for two different target audiences
  • Evaluate own and others work.

STARTER: Assessing Posters / Advertisements.  (RED HAT – FEELINGS)

Search the Internet for an advert / poster that you particularly like.  It must be advertising something and must include both text and pictures.  Grab a white board, pen and cloth.  Work in your pairs.  Use the following terms to jot down comments on your white boards about what you like about the poster, why you think they are particularly good;

  • Layout
  • Font
  • Images

Are there any posters you don’t like?  Why

TASK 1 Criteria for Posters (RED HAT – FEELINGS)

You are going to design two posters advertising the big wheel – one for teenagers and one for adults.  Grab and white board, pen and cloth.  Work in your pairs.  Jot down on your white boards as many points as possible;

  • Things on posters appeal to teenagers.
  • Things on posters appeal to adults.

REMEMBER: It must be obvious that both posters have been created by the same company, so there must be some element of “House Style”, even if it is only a logo!

TASK 2 Create a Sketch Design

  1. On your copy of Design Planner (Reso10a) sketch out ideas for each of your posters.  One of these will be aimed at teenagers, the other one at adults.  These sketch designs do not need to be coloured, but you can add notes to show the sort of colours you will use.
  2. Open Poster Information (Reso10b).  Add your name to the dialogue box.  Save this document into your Mayhem Manor folder.  Call it Poster Information

One of the Mayhem Manor staff has written a piece of text about the Big Wheel.  The problem is, it’s about as inspirational as a wet weekend watching paint dry!  It needs to be rewritten.

  1. Copy the text into the text box and rewrite the text so that it appeals to a teenage audience.  A suggestion for the first sentence has been added for you.  Try to use language that would appeal to teenagers – that means it can be informal, but don’t use slang.
  2. Copy the text into the next text box and rewrite the text, this time for an adult audience.

REMEMBER: The ticket prices also need to go on the poster.  Find these on your financial model, and include these on the poster.

TASK 3 Creating your Teenage Poster in MS Publisher

Now you have your sketch designs, you can start to create them on the computer.

  1. Open MS Publisher
  2. Choose Blank Publication, and then click on Full Page
  3. Save your poster into your Mayhem Manor folder.  Add your name to the footer.  Call the poster Teen_Poster

IMPORTANT: DO NOT click on Poster, as this option prints over multiple sheets of paper.

TASK4 Amending images using Photoshop Elements

You need to include pictures in your poster.  Before you include them in your poster you need to alter or develop them in some way.  Before you open Photoshop take a look at Mr Curtis’s screencasts.  They start simply and then get a little harder!!!  Try to add one of the effects to one of the images you are going to include in your posters.

TASK 5 Inserting Images

Find the image or images you want to use in your poster.  You can use images from Big Wheel Images (Reso10c).  Right click on the image and choose Copy.  Right click on your poster and choose Paste

Alternatively, if you have a saved copy of an image, choose Insert / Image / From File

Use your sketch design to position and resize the image on the page.

TASK 6 Insert a Text Box.

To add text to a publisher document you need to create a text box first.  Click on the Text Box icon on the Object menu, or choose Insert / Text Box and then click and drag to draw the text box.

You will see that your text box has a rotation handle, which is the little green handle on a stick.  If you pull this handle then you can place the text box at an angle.  This can be used to make text and titles more interesting

Create as many text boxes as you need and then copy and paste your text into them.

TASK 7 Select Font and Font Sizes.

Once you have pasted text and titles into the poster, you will need to experiment with fonts until you find one that is suitable for your audience

Title fonts can be more decorative than body text, but you should NOT use more than two fonts altogether.  Any font you use should be readable!

You can also change the font colour by selecting the text and clicking on the font Colour Icon on the Formatting menu.

TASK 8 Add Fills to Objects.

To add colour or effect to a text box, choose the Fill Colour Icon on the Formatting toolbar.

To add a simple one-colour fill, choose a colour or click on More Colours to see the full colour palette.

If you want an effect such as Gradient, Pattern or Texture, choose Fill Effects.  Select from the tabs at the top of the dialogue box to see each palette.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with effect!  If you don’t like one, use Ctrl Z to undo the effect.

TASK 9 Creating your Adult Poster in MS Publisher

  1. Open MS Publisher
  2. Choose Blank Publication, and then click on Full Page
  3. Save your poster into your Mayhem Manor folder.  Add your name to the footer.  Call the poster Adult_Poster

REMEMBER: DO NOT click on Poster, as this option prints over multiple sheets of paper.

TEST YOURSELF

Display your TEEN poster using Print Preview.  Move around the class looking at everyone’s work.  From the class, select your FAVOURITE poster.  Go back to your computer.  Jot down on your white board the main reason WHY you chose that particular poster.

EXTENSION WORK:  Assessing Your Posters and Your Favourite Poster.  (2 wishes and 1 star)

Evaluate your TEEN poster using the criteria we decided on at the beginning of the lesson.  REMEMBER – Think about;

  • Layout
  • Font
  • Images

Now do the same for your FAVOURITE poster.

7.3 Endangered Animals Lesson 2

RECAP: What did we discover last lesson?

Task 1 You have been asked to plan the layout of the cover of a leaflet for a charity organisation called PEAT (Protecting Endangered Animals Together).

S:\Pupils\Senior Pupils\ICT\Y07\Unit 7.3 Endangered Animals\Lesson_2

On the worksheet, look at the example and then turn over the page and design the front and back covers for your leaflet making sure that you include all of the required elements.

Task 2 When you have finished your plans, swap them with a partner and go through the checklist of elements that are required. Tick them off to check if your partner has planned everything they should have.

Task 3 Open MS Publisher and then in groups of about 4, show each other publisher techniques and tricks that you know that others might not. Pick the best one you have come up with as a group that you can share with the class.

Task 4 Using your plan, begin to create your leaflet in publisher Summary: Share ideas about what we found out.

Hello 7SC

Today you are going to research and plan a Tudor Christmas celebration. Perhaps we will use some of your ideas to have our own Christmas party at the end of term!

You will need to find out details on the Internet such as what to wear, what to serve as food and drink, entertainment and anything else needed when planning a party. I want you to look at the four different characters listed below and research each of their Christmas celebrations.

1. A wealthy courtier in Henry VIII’s London court

2. A Shrewsbury merchant

3. A Roman Catholic monk in a pre-reformation Monastery

4. A poor farm laborourer in the Shropshire countryside

Please present your information either as a Powerpoint presentation, a comparative chart or even a website produced in Publisher. Include pictures or images if you like.

By the end of the lesson, make sure you have printed off your work and bring it to your history lesson in Period 10.

While you are working, I will aim to speak to each of you about your history exam results.

Task 1 – implementing your spreadsheet

A couple of reminders as you work on this;

DON’T REPEAT YOURSELF – once you have shown me a skill or technique in detail (using screenshots) you don’t need to show me again

SHOW OFF YOUR SKILLS BUT DON’T FORGET THE BASICS – changing font styles, aligning text in cells, widening columns etc

IT DOESN’T MATTER IF YOU IMPLEMENTATION DIFFERS FROM YOUR PLAN – just ensure that you explain why you have made changes

Starter: Please open the worksheet called Create a band Res2e.doc which you saved last lesson.  Then, Using the internet, locate the website of your favourite band.  Once you have found it, see how much of the following information you can find out – write the answers on a whiteboard.

  1. when and where was the latest gig?
  2. what is the name of the band’s latest CD?
  3. which town are most of the band from?
  4. what are the hobbies and interests of some of the band?
  5. who is there management company?
  6. which record label are they signed to?

Task 1

You need to think about the structure of your website.  How many pages are you going to have?  What is the focus of each page going to be?  How will it link to the other pages on the site?  Using the structure planning sheet, identify the pages that your website will contain.  You will also need to identify how you will navigate between your pages.

Task 2

Once you have planned the pages of your site, open your website in MS Frontpage – you created this last lesson.  To make sure that this opens up properly, Choose File > Open Site and then click on the folder which contains your website and open it.

You can now create the pages for your website – remember, the homepage is always called index and when you rename your pages, always remember to include .htm at the end.

Task 3

You now need to design the basic layout for your pages.  Almost every web page is created using a grid or table.  Using one of the grids available on FrontPage, design the layout of your pages.  What will go where?  Band name, page name, pictures, links, text etc.

Task 1 Presentation Checklist

The following presentation brief from Ms Thora Thunders, the senior manager at Mayhem Manor Theme Park details what should be included in your presentation;

Key things that the presentation must include:

  1. A chart comparing the projected and actual sales figures for this year
  2. Financial model showing projected costs and revenue, including any additional money-making activities
  3. At least two predictions and recommendations based on the model

Additionally:

  • The presentation should include a title slide including one image of the big wheel
  • All slides should contain the theme park banner image (you can find this in CD Resource 9d – Big wheel images)
  • Each slide should be self-explanatory; therefore all charts and tables must be annotated to explain exactly what they are showing.

Design features

Design of the presentation should be clear and professional, using appropriate fonts and colours.

The directors will be asking questions about the information you give in the presentation, so be prepared to answer them!

You will also need your financial model and charts you created in Lesson 7 and your predictions and recommendations from Lesson 8.

TASK 2  2 stars and a wish.  (Are you following the presentation brief?)

Take a look at the presentation brief (Reso9c) which is displayed above.  Now take a look at your buddy’s presentation.  Does your partner’s presentation answer each point on the brief?

Printed a copy of the presentation brief;

  1. tick off the objectives that have been answered satisfactorily
  2. circle or highlight any points that have not been answered.

Now continue with your own presentation focusing on the points your buddy has circled.
