Year 7 2008 2009

WEEK 16 – 5th January

7.3 Lesson 1 Endangered Animals – Designing a Corporate image.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In today’s lesson you will learn how to;

  • Understand and be able to explain what is meant by “Corporate Image”.
  • Apply elements of the corporate image to produce a suitable front cover for WWF.

Task 1 Setting up a New Folder

Within your ICT folder create a new folder called Unit 7.3 Endangered Animals

STARTER –World Wildlife Fund leaflet covers.

Open Example WWF front covers (Reso1a).  The leaflets are from two different time periods, but from the same organisation.  Open the Similarities and Differences worksheet (Reso1b).  Add your name to the name dialogue box.  Save this into your Unit 7.3 Endangered Animals folder.  Call it Similarities and Differences.  On the worksheet write down five similarities and three differences between the two leaflets. The first has been done for you.

Start thinking about…

Informative writing: “Seals face many different threats; these include predators such as wolves, foxes, polar bears and the biggest threat of all – humans!  Fishing means that seals struggle to find food and many starve to death.  In addition, the pollution in the Arctic seas is creating a high level of danger.”

Persuasive writing: “Please, please help save these beautiful, defenceless animals – just a few pounds a month could make a huge difference.”

  • What is the difference between the way these two paragraphs are written?

Task 1 – Design a WWF leaflet

You have been commissioned by the WWF (formerly known as the World Wildlife Fund) to design a cover for their next leaflet.  You can choose what you focus on but you must keep to the corporate image.  That means you have to include the same features as those used on the covers they have already produced:

  • Two logos
  • Slogans
  • Web address
  • Postal addresses
  • A suitable picture

Try to copy the design of the blue WWF leaflet you looked at in the starter as closely as possible to keep to their corporate image.

Corporate image is the way an organisation presents itself.  There will usually be key items in company leaflets that remain the same, including the positioning of the logo, colours, font and so on.  This is so that the audience are able to immediately identify who has produced it.

Task 2 – Use a pre-designed template

Open the document WWF template (Reso1c).  Add your name to footer (View / Header and Footer).  Save this into your Unit 7.3 Endangered Animals folder.  Call it NAME WWF leaflet cover.  Follow the instructions on the template and insert appropriate features from the WWF Images and information (Reso1e) document.

Task 3 – Insert an image into your template

Use the items in WWF Images and Information (Reso1e) to help you design your WWF leaflet cover.  You can copy them into your own leaflet by selecting the image you want and choosing Edit > Copy. Then paste it into your own document by clicking on the page and choosing Edit > Paste.

You can save images you find on the Internet into your Unit 7.3 Endangered Animals folder.  First right click on the image and choose Save Picture As.  Give it a name you will recognise (e.g. leopard).  Go to your document and choose Insert / Picture / From File.  Find the folder where you saved the image.  Select the image and click Insert.  The image will be placed in the document.

Task 4 – Insert text or WordArt

To add text to your document, first draw a text box using the Text box tool.  Type our text in, or copy and paste text from WWF Images and information (Reso1e) document.  If you want to add WordArt, click on the WordArt icon.  You will then be given a gallery of styles to choose from.  Select the style you want and click OK.  The type your text in and click OK again.  The WordArt will appear on your page.

NOTE: you should ONLY use WordArt for titles.

EXTENSION WORK

Open Homework sheet (Reso1f).  Add your name to the name dialogue box.  Save this into your Unit 7.3 Endangered Animals folder.  Call it Leaflet Cover Planning Sheet

Plan the layout of the cover of a leaflet for a charity organisation called PEAT (Protecting Endangered Animals Together).  The charity helps to protect a wide range of endangered animals such as polar bears, elephants, whales, leopards and pandas, to name but a few!  Look at the example leaflet cover from the WWF leaflet.  Your cover should have the same elements.  These include:

  • Title
  • Logo
  • Date and issue number
  • Picture
  • Slogan
  • Website address

You should also write on your plan what colours and pictures you are going to use.  The diagram on the left is a plan that might have been created for the production of the WWF cover on the right.
