Starterexcel quiz – will you be one of the first 3 to 100%?

Task 1 – Discounts and VAT

At the end of last lesson you started adding discounts and VAT to your model – 10% discount on all prices and 20% VAT on all prices.

Make sure you update your revenue and costs calculations to reflect your new prices.

Task 2 – Using goal seek further

Can you use goal seek to answer the following questions;

  1. Make a note of your current profit – if VAT goes up to 22% what discount do you need to keep your profit the same?
  2. Change your figures back to 10% discount and 20% VAT – what discount should you give to increase your profit by £500?

Task 3 – Creating and Using Charts

Using the data which can be found in Yourbands_Downloadable_Chart_Res4a.doc which is in the folder P:\Senior Pupils\ICT\Y08\Unit 8.4 Band Manager\Lesson_4, create a chart which shows the number of downloads last week for each band.

  1. Copy and paste the data into a new tab on your spreadsheet and also create the chart on a separate tab.
  2. You need to sort your data – sort by the No. of downloads last week in descending order.  For help with sorting click here but make sure you watch the screencast to the end.
  3. Make sure that you label your chart and your axis correctly.

Extension

  1. Can you add this week’s downloads to the chart as well?
  2. Watch this video on how to change the style of your chart and then change yours as appropriate.

Task 4 – Making changes to your model

Now the band are doing so well you have decided to try and sell some extra merchandise at your concerts.  Can you think of at least two extra things you could sell at your concerts?  Programmes maybe…

Remember, you will need to buy your merchandise before you sell it so you will need to add rows in costs as well as revenue.

Task 5 – Formatting your sheet

Lots of help available here to assist you in making your sheet highly presentable using borders, shading and colours.

Extension

Can you format your profit and loss figure so that the cell changes colour if the profit goes above £1,000?  Use this screencast to help you and test to see if it works by changing some of the variables.  Can you use this technique on any other cells in your spreadsheet?

8W Period 4 Tuesday 15th May 2012

8.5 Reality TV Show – Lesson 8 – Reality TV Show: Branding and Logos.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In today’s lesson you will learn how to;

  • Recognise how logos can be linked with corporate image, brand and marketing.
  • Create a logo for a reality TV show.

STARTER – Self Image.

Work in your groups.  Grab a white board, pen and cloth.  You have become overnight celebrities.  You are going to create a brand image for yourself.  On your white boards write down a list of five things that you think would be important to your “image”.

Task 1 – What is branding?

Branding is about putting your mark on your product so that the people who are buying it can recognize that it is yours!  This can be done by:

  • Designing products and packaging to reflect the company image
  • Advertising (TV, billboards, magazines, radio)
  • Logo (an image that symbolizes the company)
  • Strapline (a slogan that sums up what the company is about).

Watch the PowerPoint presentation Logos and Corporate Image (Reso8a) LESSON 8.  Can you identify the companies?

Task 2 – Create a strapline.

If you had to describe yourself to a stranger in three words, what would they be?  Now try and join the words to make a short, snappy sentence (no more than eight words!)  This is called a strapline.  A strapline is a short slogan designed to describe a brand in a memorable way.  Now write a strapline for your show that is short, snappy and makes the show sound unmissable

We’re loving it!

Use your head…

Task 3 – What does your brand need to say about you?

A good way to increase “brand awareness” is by using a logo.  A logo is an image or symbol, and can also include text and graphics.  Your logo needs to make people understand what the show is about, and identify with it – that means that it appeals directly to their tastes and interests.  Work in your groups.  Grab a white board, pen and cloth.  Draw a mind map diagram that includes all the things that you want people to think about the show.  The mind map shown below is an example of how a smoothie company might start to do this.

Task 4 – Sketch a logo.

Now you should have a mind map diagram that shows you all the things that you want your brand image to include.  You might even want to print this out and do some little sketches on it.  Now take a piece of paper and sketch some ideas in pencil.

Task 5 – Produce a final logo design using ICT.

Choose one of your ideas to produce as your final logo.  You need to create this using software, so you can save the logo electronically.  You can produce your logo using a desk-top publishing program such as SERIF PAGE PLUS or MS Publisher, or an image editing program such as Adobe Photoshop Elements.  Remember to add the name of your show to your logo.  You can use images from the folder Images for Logo Design (Reso8b) LESSON 8 if you wish.

Task 6 – Save a logo as a JPEG or Gif file.

Once you have designed your logo, you should save it as an image file.  If you do this you can easily copy and paste it into other documents, and even put it on a website if you choose.  If you are using MS Publisher you can do this in the following way:

First group your logo by clicking on each of the elements whilst holding down the Shift key, then right clicking on the group and choosing Grouping / Group.  Then right clicking and choose Copy

TEST YOURSELF.  TWO Stars and a Wish.

Look at your buddies finished logo.  Can you give them some positive feedback?  Tell then TWO things that you like about their logo.  Can you give them some positive criticism?  Suggest one way that they can improve their logo.

EXTENSION WORK.

Find three examples of logos on the internet that you like.  Try to explain why you think they are effective, both in terms of design and corporate image

8.5 Reality TV Show – Lesson 1 The System Lifecycle.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In today’s lesson you will learn how to;

  • Learn about the System Lifecycle and how it is used to plan projects.
  • Create a mind map diagram.

Task 1 Setting up a New Folder

Within your ICT folder create a new folder called Unit 8.4 Reality TV Show

INTRODUCTION

In this unit you have been asked to help a TV production company create a new exciting reality TV show.  As part of the production team, you are going to be involved in the project from beginning to end.  You will need to think of the show as a project, and split it into manageable sections for you and your team to work on.  This is a long unit of work that combines a lot of the skills that you have developed in previous units.

START THINKING ABOUT – SYSTEMS.

A system is a method of carrying out a complex task in a number of easier stages.  Most businesses have systems for doing things, which make life a lot easier for the people who have to do them!  For example, in the making of the blog you are now reading, a system was followed which includes stages such as research, authoring, designing, proof reading and posting (to name but a few!).  Computers help us set up systems to ensure that tasks can be achieved successfully and on time.

STARTER: SYSTEMS

Open the word document “System Starter (Reso1a)”.  Add your name to the dialogue box.  Save this into your Unit 8.4 Reality TV Show folder.  Lots of professional people use computer systems to help them do their work each day.  In the right-hand column, write down at least one way in which each of these people might use computers as part of their job.

Task – 2 Work from a Brief.

Many projects start with a known brief.  This is a document that tells you what you have to do and gives a general outline of what the project needs to achieve.  It is called a “brief” because it is usually quite short, and doesn’t give much detail.  It is up to you as the project management team to read the brief and begin to break it down into more manageable tasks.  Open the word document Project Brief (Reso1c).  Save this into your Unit 8.4 Reality TV Show folder.

The briefis to produce:

  1. A really brilliant idea for the show
  2. A financial model to help us manage our budget
  3. A database to log and monitor our entries
  4. A control system to operate a greenhouse for the contestants
  5. A poster to advertise the show.

Work in your groups.  Grab a white board, pen and cloth.  Jot down on your white boards your group’s idea for a show.  What software packages could you use to carry out tasks 2-5, in the table above?

Task 3 – Stages of the System Lifecycle.

To help you to plan this project, you will use something called the System Lifecycle.  This splits the project into stages.

The main stages of the System Lifecycle are:

  • Identify (decide what we need to do)
  • Test (make sure the system works)
  • Design (plan the system)
  • Evaluate (decide how we could make the system better)
  • Develop (implement; put the design into action)
  • Analyse (decide what we need to make sure the system works)

These are the stages, but they are not in the right order.  Use your white boards.  Can you put each stage in the correct order in the System Lifecycle?  Open the word document “System Lifecycle Worksheet” (Reso1d).   Add your name to the dialogue box.  Save this into your Unit 8.4 Reality TV Show folder.  Place the six stages of the System Lifecycle in the correct order on the circle.  Open the PowerPoint presentation System Lifecycle (Reso1e) to check your work.  Which part of the cycle is represented by the brief

Task 4 Create a mind map diagram.

The brief helps you identify the problem, and also gives some idea of what tasks you will need to carry out.  A mind map diagram is a good way of breaking down a big problem into more manageable problems.  It can also help us decide what tasks we need to do, and what tools or software we can use to do them.  Open the PowerPoint presentation Mind Map (Reso1f).  This breaks down the tasks involved in planning an end of term party.  Using your brief, draw a mind map to help you break down the problem of creating a reality TV show into smaller tasks.  Remember to include what software you would use for each task.

TIPS:

  • Use different colours for different parts of the problem.
  • Separate your map into clear sections.
  • If you think of a really good idea while you are drawing your mind map, put it down.

TEST YOURSELF.

Can you write down on your white boards the stages of the System Lifecycle in the correct order?  Which two parts of the cycle have you completed during this lesson?
