8Y – Period 4: Friday 11th May

Starterexcel quiz – will you be one of the first 3 to 100%?

Task 1 – Discounts and VAT

At the end of last lesson you started adding discounts and VAT to your model – 10% discount on all prices and 20% VAT on all prices.

Make sure you update your revenue and costs calculations to reflect your new prices.

Task 2 – Using goal seek further

Can you use goal seek to answer the following questions;

  1. Make a note of your current profit – if VAT goes up to 22% what discount do you need to keep your profit the same?
  2. Change your figures back to 10% discount and 20% VAT – what discount should you give to increase your profit by £500?

Task 3 – Creating and Using Charts

Using the data which can be found in Yourbands_Downloadable_Chart_Res4a.doc which is in the folder P:\Senior Pupils\ICT\Y08\Unit 8.4 Band Manager\Lesson_4, create a chart which shows the number of downloads last week for each band.

  1. Copy and paste the data into a new tab on your spreadsheet and also create the chart on a separate tab.
  2. You need to sort your data – sort by the No. of downloads last week in descending order.  For help with sorting click here but make sure you watch the screencast to the end.
  3. Make sure that you label your chart and your axis correctly.

Extension

  1. Can you add this week’s downloads to the chart as well?
  2. Watch this video on how to change the style of your chart and then change yours as appropriate.

Task 4 – Making changes to your model

Now the band are doing so well you have decided to try and sell some extra merchandise at your concerts.  Can you think of at least two extra things you could sell at your concerts?  Programmes maybe…

Remember, you will need to buy your merchandise before you sell it so you will need to add rows in costs as well as revenue.

Task 5 – Formatting your sheet

Lots of help available here to assist you in making your sheet highly presentable using borders, shading and colours.

Extension

Can you format your profit and loss figure so that the cell changes colour if the profit goes above £1,000?  Use this screencast to help you and test to see if it works by changing some of the variables.  Can you use this technique on any other cells in your spreadsheet?

8Y – Period 1: Wednesday 2nd May

Task 1: Tour Figures worksheet

Using the table on your sheet, open the file called Tour Spreadsheet – Res2d.xls which can be found in; Pupils:\Senior Pupils\ICT\Y08\Unit 8.4 Band Manager\Lesson_2 and save a copy in your documents.

Now copy the relevant information from your sheet into the model and see if you can create some of the formulas.

Task 4: Powerpoint Quiz

Using the whiteboards – see if you can answer the questions on the board.

Task 5: Using goal seek

Once the model is complete, use goal seek to answer the three questions at the bottom

Unit 8.4 – Band Manager: Introduction

In this unit you are going to be the manager of a new teen band called The Shakes.  You’ve got big plans for them – they are great musicians and have some really catchy songs.  They also put on a great performance and already have a growing fan base.

However, they aren’t very good with money!  They’ve brought you in to help them sort out the business side of the band, to make sure they don’t end up in the bargain bucket too early on in their careers!

You are going to create a business model for the band, in order to keep track of how much money they are spending and how much they are making.

While you are wating for others to finish other activities, have a look on the internet for some pictures which could be the band and save them into your new folder.

Task 1

If you haven’t already done so, please create a new folder called “Unit 8.4 – Band Manager” in your year 8 ICT folder.

Open the file called Shake ‘em up spreadsheet – Res1c.xls which can be found in Pupils:\Senior Pupils\ICT\Y08\Unit 8.4 Band Manager\Lesson_1.  Work through the questions in Activity 1.

Task 2

Before attempting the Activity 2 questions, watch this video about using the goal seek tool – you will need your headphones!

Task 3

Now go on to use goal seek to answer the activity 2 questions.
