Lesson 1: Research and plan a digital portfolio

Lesson Objectives:

Plan a digital portfolio – consider the elements required.

Begin to assemble materials required to create the digital portfolio.

Create a wordpress blog by opening an account. (this may be lesson 2, but if you have your plan and materials ready we may get this done)

Introduction

The academic digital portfolio is an excellent way to keep an archive of your work and achievements in school.  It is important to plan this assignment so that you can decide what  needs to be included.  The goal of the lesson is to familiarize yourself with the concept of digital portfolios, to discover the common elements of a digital portfolio and ultimately to create a digital portfolio of your own.

Task 1: What needs to be included?

An electronic portfolio is an excellent way to document your academic and extra-curricular accomplishments throughout your time at school.  Technology has provided you with many interesting ways to store and present your information.  You can create videos, images, photos and web pages that are all about your favorite topic … you.  (just kidding).

It is important to do a bit of research and find out what exactly a digital portfolio is and how to create one.   As you research the internet it may be useful to search for online ‘resume’ or ‘cv’ in the sites and consider the questions that follow.  You should use a word processor to document your findings.

What is a digital portfolio? (DP)

What is the purpose of a DP?

What types of storage media are commonly used for DPs?

Are there different types of DP’s?

How would a professional DP differ from a student DP?

What materials should you include in your DP?

How do you create a DP (i.e. list the steps).

Research the websites.  Remember to document your research.  Plan what you want to be included in yours.

Summary:

Test yourself: What needs to be included – be ready to state what is important (for you) and present this to the class or in a working pair.

Sketch your plan: this may be a list; mind map or flowchart. You may find it easier to present this information – maybe in a powerpoint or in a word document so that you can refer to it as you go along.

Once you have completed your research and made your plan of what is to be included, we can go on create an account in wordpress.
