Lesson 3
In today’s lesson we will be CREATING A LOGO
Before we start, it is important to understand the importance of a logo and its link to the corporate image.
Starter: Try to identify the logos in this quiz. Some are very easy but be careful, the american ones are difficult.
Task 1
Today you are going to create a logo for PEAT using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 (the little camera icon on your desktop)
This may be different to any programme you have used before, so we have to experiment a bit and learn as we go along. I will show you how to make a start and then you can have a go.
Refer to these screenshots for a reminder:

Keyboard Shortcuts - The following will be very useful today
- ctrl+C – copy
- crtl+V – paste
- ctrl+X – cut
- ctrl+Z – undo
Task 2
I would like you to create two different logos using different shapes and images. Once you have created both logos I would like you to discuss with your partner which is best and which should be included in your leaflet. If your partner is not ready then you could start to annotate (type text or write on to your logo to explain the choices that you made saying why you think the logo is suitable for the organisation ‘PEAT’)
If time: open your leaflet in publisher and continue to work on the front and back covers. Remember – no white space!

7.1 Lesson 8 Where I live: London – Our Capital
Assessment Activity
In this assessed activity you will work on behalf of the London Tourist Board. They have organised a trip to London for a group of students from Australia. The Australian students are visiting London for five nights. The students are between 11 – 13 years of age, and want to see all the sights.
A presentation has been created for the students to give them a taste of what they can expect to see when they get here. However, the London Tourist Board is not very happy with the presentation as it stands, and they want you to improve it. There are comments it the notes section of each slide telling you what changes are necessary. It is your job to help to sell the trip to the Australian students. Make them have no doubt that they are going to have the time of their lives. You have only one hour to do this, because they’ll be arriving very soon.
Open London Presentation (Reso8b). Choose File / Save As and navigate to your Unit 7.1 Where I Live folder. Rename it NAME London Presentation e.g. Mrs Munro London Presentation.
Open the London Images folder. This contains the images that you will need to use to improve the presentation.
The Notes sections is beneath each slide at the bottom of the screen. Use the scroll bars to find all of the instructions.
Work individually, in silence. I will not be able to show you how to do any of the tasks. Good luck. REMEMBER: Save your work regularly as you go along.

TASK 1 Searching the internet for information about your Clothing Outlets
By now, you should have decided which Clothing Outlets you are going to base your folded leaflet on and you have hopefully collected some printed information about the Shops. Today you are going to search the internet for information about your chosen Clothing Outlets.
HERE IS A REMINDER FOR TASK B which you are working on…
Task B – Searching the internet for information and developing your text
1. Using a search engine on the internet, search for retail clothing outlets. This should be a multiple criteria search so, for example, “Clothing” AND “Formal wear” AND “Shrewsbury” should be typed in. Using the advanced search option may help.
2. Take a screen shot of the search results page making sure that it includes evidence of your multiple criteria search. Add this screenshot to a word document. Name this document Internet Search Evidence for Activity 1, add your NAME, FORM / GROUP and DATE to the header and PAGE NUMBERS to the footer.
3. You are aiming to find out as much as you can about each shop so you might need to follow some of the links on your search page – take screen shots of various pages that will be useful and add these to your word document. Useful pages on websites might include; contact details, descriptions of the shop, catalogues
4. Print out your screenshots and along with the printed information from your shop (you may want to scan or photocopy this information), highlight the information that you think will be useful for your leaflet. You should highlight text, pictures and figures that you might use and write next to them why they will be useful.
TASK 2 Printing your evidence document. Print preview your work BEFORE you print it. Check that your NAME is in the header. (have this ready to print at the start of next lesson)
Have you included:
KEYWORDS RESULTS (HITS)
HOMEPAGE OUTFIT (Main item of outfit e.g. dress, suit, etc)
PRICES
CONTACT DETAILS
OTHER– MAP, VIRTUAL TOUR SELECTION of IMAGES (e.g. Logo, banner, etc) NOW print your work to the KC2mono printer. (next lesson)
EXTENSION TASK What have you learned about gathering data? Make some notes about this.

Lesson 4
Recap:
we started to select and insert images;
say 3 things we learned (type this up in word) OR recap working in pairs as a critical friend
Task 1 – Inserting images
Look at your feedback on the yellow sheet 2*’s and a wish. Consider what is good about your presentation and try to do more of this to improve your presentation. Look at the wish – what can you do to improve?Edit your sides so that the images are suitable and appropriate. Go back to last lesson on the blog if you can’t remember, or look at your recap, or discuss with your buddy. Continue to ask for feedback about your presentation. Your aim is to improve it so that it meets the criteria set out on the yellow sheet.
Task 2 – using a consistent font
What ever your personal preference for colour, font, etc, it is important that your presentation has “consistency” – the same fonts and background throughout the document to make it clear, easy to read and professional looking.
The key purpose of adding text to your presentation is to convince people that your town is a great place to live – be persuasive. REMEMBER: your text needs to appeal to all of the family!
- To add text to a slide, click into the text box and start typing.
- To add a text box to a slide, click on the text box icon, click on the slide where you want the text box to be and start typing.
You should not use more than two fonts in your presentation. Add interest by using BOLD, ITALIC and UNDERLINE.
- To add further effects to text, choose Format / Font.
Do not get carried away adding text. The GOLDEN RULE is no more than 5 lines of text with no more than 6 words per line – that’s 30 words – be concise.
Recap:
2 *’s and a wish – evaluate use of font.

Today you will take a past paper to give you an idea of the questions you will need to deal with and then we shall look at the requirements of the portfolio. When you complete the exam paper then have a look at the requirements of the portfolio.
The requirements of the course can be found at P:\Senior Pupils\ICT\Key Skills\Key Skills Level 2. The document is called Level 2 task list (09-10).
