1. List 4 rights of data subjects under the Data Protection Act

a right to access their personal data, a right of correction, a right to prevent distress, a right to prevent direct marketing, a right to prevent automatic decisions, a right of complaint to the Information commissioner, a right to compensation

 2. List 4 responsibilities of data controllers under the Data Protection Act

collected and used fairly inside the law, only held for the reasons given to the Information Commissioner, only used for registered purposes, information held must not be excessive, must be kept accurate and up to date, must not be kept longer than necessary, information must be kept safe and secure, the files cannot be transferred outside of the European Economic Area

 3. List 3 different types of printer and explain the main differences between them

Ink-jet, dot-matrix, laser
Ink-jet > relatively cheap, good for photos
laser > most expensive, best quality, fastest
dot-matrix > slowest, cheapest, lowest quality

 4. List 4 functions performed by an operating system

stores boot up instructions, manages logon and security, supervises programs running on the computer, handles input, controls output, allocates processor time, allocates memory

 5. Explain the advantages of using a relational database compared to a flat file database

data is only stored once, less duplication of data, less chance of mistakes being made, less storage space taken up, quicker to input data, can produce queries/reports combining data from more than one table

 6. List 3 advantages and 1 disadvantage of using a spreadsheet compared to a pencil and paper option

easier to edit, faster to edit, more accurate, totals are automatically recalculated, can be backed up

training needed, viruses can corrupt data, data loss if the machine crashes or loses power
