Visit your chosen venue and collect some printed information about the venue and its presentations.  This could be in the form of a brochure, a leaflet, a newsletter or a flyer.  The more information the better.

TASK 2 Developing Text for your poster.

Open Word and type in the title “Developing Text for the Poster“.  Add your NAME to the header.  Save this document into your Key Skills level 2 / Activity 2 folder.  Type in two subtitles – BEFORE and AFTER.  Beneath the BEFORE subtitle copy some appropriate text about your venue or event from the internet.  Copy in the URL to acknowledge copyright of this material.  Beneath the AFTER subtitle reword the original text you found.  Use the thesaurus to help you to apply new adjectives and adverbs.  THIS TEXT MUST APPEAR ON YOUR FINAL POSTER!!!

TASK 3 Developing Images for the POSTER

Open a word document.  Type in the title “Developing images for the poster”.  Add your name to the header and page numbers to the footer.  Type in the subtitles

Beneath the BEFORE subtitle copy an image you want to develop from the internet about your chosen venue / event.  Copy in the URL (web address) for this image to acknowledge copyright. 

Beneath the AFTER subtitle copy the developed image.  Describe how you have developed it in Photoshop.  This developed image MUST appear on your poster.

Open Publisher or if you prefer it PagePlus.  You need a ONE page A4 portrait or landscape document.  Add your name to the footer.  Save this document as DRAFT POSTER into your Activity 2 Poster folder.  This should be in your Key Skills Level 2 Folder. 

The following elements need to appear on your DRAFT POSTER.

• Undeveloped image – the original found on the internet. 
• Undeveloped text – the original found on the internet. 
• Name of VENUE. 
• Location (address) of venue. 
• Contact details (Tel No. Fax No. URL of website, email) of venue.

Create an email.  Subject =  ”My Draft Poster“.  Attach your draft version of your poster.  Send to = Ask at least one, but preferably two, members of your class to suggest improvements for your poster.  BEFORE YOU SEND YOUR EMAIL, take a screenshot of its content. 

Paste this “SENT” email into your word document.  DO NOT REDUCE ITS SIZE because I need to read all of the elements!  Below the screenshot, comment on the purpose and content of the email. 

When you receive an email from a classmate please make at least one sensible suggestion to improve their work and try to reply promptly.  e.g. Use photoshot to enhance your venue logo.  OR Try to reword your blurb about your event to make it sound move interesting. 

When you receive your reply(ies), take a screenshot and paste it into your word document.  Again comment on the content of the reply(ies).  You on can comment on wether or not you plan to use the suggestion!

Work in your groups.  Grab a white board, pen and cloth.  Jot down the meaning of the following terms:

Open Suki’s Skate Shop Revenue spreadsheet (Reso1b).  Use the information to give an example of each of the terms above. 

Can you work out what the formula would be for the revenue?

Task 1 Setting up a New Folder. 

Within your ICT folder create a new folder called Unit 7.4 Extreme Sports. 

Task 2 SUKI SKATE SHOP REVENUE 

Open Suki’s Skate Shop Revenue spreadsheet (Reso1b).  Save this into your Unit 7.4 Extreme Sports folder.  Add your name, form, group and date to the header, and page numbering to the footer.  Call the spreadsheet Suki’s Skate Shop Revenue. 

• Answer the questions in the pale blue boxes. 
• A spreadsheet can work out formulae.  How do you write a formula for revenue?  Fill in the entire revenue column. 
• Remember you should NOT just type in the number, but use the cell reference either by typing it in or by clicking on the cell. 
• There is a much easier way of writing in the revenue formula for reach product.  Does anyone know an easier method?  (HINT: Fill Handle)
• How would you calculate the total revenue?  Again there is more than one way to do this calculation.  Does anyone know how to use the AutoSum tool? 
• Additional challenge.  You know how to use the SUM function.  Can you do something similar to work out the maximum (MAX) and minimum (MIN) revenue figures? 
• What if? Questions.  At the bottom left of the spreadsheet you will find two tabs.  One reads “Suki’s Skate Shop” – that’s the one you are on now.  The other reads “What if Questions”.  Go to the second worksheet and answer the “What if?” questions.  You will need to use the tabs to move between worksheets throughout this task. 

Task 3 Suki’s Profit and Loss –  Work out costs

We are now going to think about how much Suki’s products cost.  Open Suki’s Costs spreadsheet (Reso2c).  Save this into your Unit 7.4 Extreme Sports folder.  Add your name, form, group and date to the header, and page numbering to the footer.  Call the spreadsheet Suki’s Costs.  Remember a cost is something that a business has to pay.  In this case, Suki needs to buy all the products she wants to sell in her shop. 

• Enter a formula to work out how much each product has cost Suki.  HINT: Formula start with =. 
• Enter a formula to work out the total costs.  HINT: AutoSum. 

Task 4 Suki’s Profit and Loss – Work out profit. 

We also have to think about the amount of profit Suki will make from each of her product ranges and her total profit. 

PROFIT = REVENUE – COSTS

Making a profit is the reason most businesses exist! 

• Click on the tab Suki’s profit at the bottom of the spreadsheet. 
• Enter a formula to work out how much profit will be made from each product range, and total profit. 

Task 5 – Suki’s Profit and Loss – What if Questions

• Click on the tab What if Questions at the bottom of the spreadsheet. 
• Use the other two tabs to answer the 9 questions on this sheet. 

EXTENSION WORK – DEFINITIONS

Work in your groups.  Grab a white board, pen and cloth.  Jot down the meaning of one of the following terms:

Each group needs to elect a spokes person to read out your definition to the rest of the class.  Do the rest of the class agree that their definition is correct?

TASK 1 Finishing your Digital Poster

Your digital poster should contain:

• at least 3 frames / slides. 
• at least 2 “experiences” advertised.

On every slide the following information should appear -

• Company name
• Logo
• Slogan
• Web address / URL – www.timemachine.co.uk 
• Email – enquires@timemachine.co.uk

Yoy will need an appropriate image and some brief text to promote each of your chosen “experiences”. 

TASK 2 Setting your Digital Poster up as a Kiosk Presentation. 

From the Slide Show menu choose Set Up Slide Show.  Tick the “Loop continuously until Esc” option and then click OK. 

Make sure that you rehearse your timings!!!  From the Slide Show menu, choose Rehearse Timings.  Read quietly and slowly through the text on each slide, manually using the mouse to move forward through your presentation.  Click on the X to stop recording.  A dialogu box will appear .  If you are happy with your recording click on YES, otherwise click on NO and rerecord your show. 

TASK 3 Print Handouts of your Digital Poster. 

Ensure that your NAME is in the FOOTER of Notes and Handouts.  From the Insert menu choose Header and Footer.  Click on Notes and Handouts.  Tick the Footer and type in your NAME. 

From the File menu choose Print.  Make sure that you print Handouts to the KC2mono printer.  CHANGE from Full Page Slides to Handouts – 3 Slides or 4 Slides. 

TASK 4 Saving your Digital Poster for marking. 

From the File menu choose Save As… and navigate to the General area.  Here is the path – S:\General\ICT\Year 9\9X 2011 2012\9X TIME MACHINE\9X TIME MACHINE DIGITAL POSTER. Save your work into the 9X Time Machine Digital Poster folder. 

TASK 5 Researching a Time Machine Experience. 

TOPIC – Evacuee Experience – aimed at primary school children going on a Evacuee Experience.

STEP 1 – What do you already know?

Evacuation – Children who lived in cities like London were sent away to the country on trains.  Keywords – Evacuation, children, London, trains, Blitz. 

STEP 2 – Search techniques

Open Google or Ask and experiment with key words.  Try to use advanced search techniques like Boolean connectors (AND, OR and NOT).  Does the information you find seem reliable? 

STEP 3 – Choosing subtopics and collecting information. 

Open the website www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk .  Under the History link choose WW11.  Open the document Research Bank (9b).  Add your name to the dialogue box.  Save this into your 9.3 Time Machine folder.  Call it Leaflet Research YOUR NAME.  You need to decide on between 4 to 6 subtopics for your leaflet.  Type the subtopic headings into your document.  Copy and Paste information you think is interesting into your website.  Add the URL of the website you found the information.  Was the information reliable?  Why?  You can only answer this truthfully if you find the same information in a number of different sites. 

STEP 4 – Rewrite text for a specific audience. 

Think about:

Readability – Use words and language that your audience (primary school children) will understand.  Use the Synonyms function in Word.  Use short sentences. 

Interest – How can you catch the imagination of your young audience?

STEP 5 – Finding relevant images. 

Use the folder Evacuation images (9d) to find ONE image for each of your subtopics in your document Leaflet Research YOUR NAME.  If you cannot find a suitable image for a topic, then use Google images.  BUT you must copy in the URL of the website you found the image. 

EXTENSION – Using Primary Sources. 

A primary source is a record of an event taken at the time the event was happening.  Some examples include:

Photos – Evacuee children.  These can be found on the Internet.

Letters – Evacuee children were encouraged to write to their parents.  Why not use a quote from a letter in your leaflet. 

Posters – These were used to encourage parents to evacuate their children. 

Newspaper Articles – All good quality newspapers have an archive of articles.  Some of these articles will describe events that happened during WW11.

Activty 1 – Understanding Discounts

Open up the file called Suki’s Special Offer – Res3a.xls which can be found in: Pupils:\Senior Pupils\ICT\Y07\Unit 7.4 Extreme Sports\Lesson_3.  Suki is going to give her customers a 25% discount.  Can you put in a formulas which will work out the new selling price and calculate the revenue?

Creating digital posters for Time Machine

Task 1 – Analysing the Time Machine Digital Poster

With a partner, discuss the answers to these questions;

1. How many different pages are used?
2. What elements are consistent from page to page?  (colours, fonts, layout, logos etc.)
3. Are the pictures and text static or are they animated?
4. Are there any transitions between the pages?
5. Which software would you use to create a digital poster?

Task 2 – Creating your digital poster

The business needs more customers. Produce a digital poster to be displayed in mainline stations, airports and the Underground. The digital poster must attract attention and persuade busy commuters to investigate a Time Machine experience.

The digital poster must:

• consist of at least three screens that scroll automatically
• loop automatically
• attract the attention of busy people passing by
• introduce the Time Machine company and its slogan (if you have one)
• give details of a specific Time Machine experience
• display the company logo and contact details on every screen

Task 2 – Visitor survey 

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from cars harm the environment. The New Forest National Park Authority wants to reduce the damage caused to the environment by cars.  If the number of visitors who use cars to get to the forest could be reduced, less damage would be done. 

The VisitorSurveyL2 file contains data from a survey. A sample of visitors to the New Forest were asked: 

• How far have you travelled? 
• How many times a year do you visit the New Forest? 
• How did you get here? 
• What incentive can we offer that would persuade you to leave your car at home? 

A green, amber, red rating system was used to classify their vehicles according to how much carbon dioxide (CO2) they produce.

This is your EMISSIONS table, which you will need to use in your VLOOKUP function.   

• Green = 0.12 kg per mile 
• Amber = 0.20 kg per mile 
• Red = 0.30 kg per mile 

(a) Open the VisitorSurveyL2 spreadsheet. 

Enter your name, candidate number and centre number (29265)in the footer. 

Use the spreadsheet to calculate the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by cars in a year by each of the people surveyed.  (6)

Task 2 – Searching the internet for information

1. Using a search engine on the internet, search for your venue.

2. Take a screen shot of the search results page

3. Go to a suitable website and take screen shots of various pages that will be useful.

4. Print out your screenshots and along with the printed information from your venue (you may want to scan or photocopy this information), highlight the information that you think will be useful for your leaflet. You should highlight text, pictures and figures that you might use and write next to them why they will be useful.

TASK 3 Developing Text for your poster.

Open Word and type in the title “Developing Text for the Poster“.  Add your NAME to the header.  Save this document into your Key Skills level 2 / Activity 2 folder.  Type in two subtitles – BEFORE and AFTER.  Beneath the BEFORE subtitle copy some appropriate text about your venue or event from the internet.  Copy in the URL to acknowledge copyright of this material.  Beneath the AFTER subtitle reword the original text you found.  Use the thesaurus to help you to apply new adjectives and adverbs.  THIS TEXT MUST APPEAR ON YOUR FINAL POSTER!!

TASK 4 Developing Images for the POSTER

Open a word document.  Type in the title “Developing images for the poster”.  Add your name to the header and page numbers to the footer.  Type in the subtitles

• BEFORE
• AFTER. 

Beneath the BEFORE subtitle copy an image you want to develop from the internet about your chosen venue / event.  Copy in the URL (web address) for this image to acknowledge copyright. 

Beneath the AFTER subtitle copy the developed image.  Describe how you have developed it in Photoshop.  This developed image MUST appear on your poster.

TASK 5 Creating the DRAFT version of your POSTER. 

(Everyone except Tilly and Vicky). 

Open Publisher or if you prefer it PagePlus.  You need a ONE page A4 portrait or landscape document.  Add your name to the footer.  Save this document as DRAFT POSTER into your Activity 2 Poster folder.  This should be in your Key Skills Level 2 Folder. 

The following elements need to appear on your DRAFT POSTER.

• Undeveloped image – the original found on the internet. 
• Undeveloped text – the original found on the internet. 
• Name of VENUE. 
• Location (address) of venue. 
• Contact details (Tel No. Fax No. URL of website, email) of venue. 
• Name of EVENT or PERFORMANCE. 
• Date(s) of event of performance. 
• Prices of tickets / seat, etc. 

Please use the above list as a CHECKLIST!!!

TASK 6 Purposeful Use of Email. 

(Tilly you need to improve your email document)

Open Word.  Type in the title “Purposeful Use of Email“.  Add your name to the header.  Save this document into your Activity 2 POSTER folder. 

Create an email.  Subject =  ”My Draft Poster“.  Attach your draft version of your poster.  Send to = Ask at least one, but preferably two, members of your class to suggest improvements for your poster.  BEFORE YOU SEND YOUR EMAIL, take a screenshot of its content. 

Paste this “SENT” email into your word document.  DO NOT REDUCE ITS SIZE because I need to read all of the elements!  Below the screenshot, comment on the purpose and content of the email. 

When you receive an email from a classmate please make at least one sensible suggestion to improve their work and try to reply promptly.  e.g. Use photoshot to enhance your venue logo.  OR Try to reword your blurb about your event to make it sound move interesting. 

When you receive your reply(ies), take a screenshot and paste it into your word document.  Again comment on the content of the reply(ies).  You on can comment on wether or not you plan to use the suggestion! 

TASK 7 Creating the FINAL version of your POSTER. 

Open Publisher or if you prefer it PagePlus.  You need a ONE page A4 portrait or landscape document.  Add your name to the footer.  Save this document as FINAL POSTER into your Activity 2 Poster folder.  This should be in your Key Skills Level 2 Folder.

Check that your portfolio is complete and that page numbers have been added to the bottom right hand corner of each page.

Open Word and create a document entitled Folder Structure.  You will need to show a number of screenshots from your network area. 

• Screenshot 1 – Your area showing a Key Skills folder. 
• Screenshot 2 - Your Key Skills folder showing an Activity 1 (Outfir Leaflet) folder and Activity 2 (Poster) folder. 
• Screenshot 3 – Your Activity 1 folder showing the relevent files for activity 1.
• Screenshot 4 – Your Activity 2 folder showing the relevent files for activity 2. 

FINALLY…

You need to sign and date your cover sheet.  BLACK INK PLEASE!!!
