7.1 Lesson 8 Where I live: London – Our Capital

Assessment Activity

In this assessed activity you will work on behalf of the London Tourist Board. They have organised a trip to London for a group of students from Australia. The Australian students are visiting London for five nights. The students are between 11 – 13 years of age, and want to see all the sights.

A presentation has been created for the students to give them a taste of what they can expect to see when they get here. However, the London Tourist Board is not very happy with the presentation as it stands, and they want you to improve it. There are comments in the notes section of each slide telling you what changes are necessary.

It is your job to help to sell the trip to the Australian students. Make them have no doubt that they are going to have the time of their lives. You have only one hour to do this, because they’ll be arriving very soon.

Open London Presentation (Reso8b). Choose File / Save As and navigate to your Unit 7.1 Where I Live folder. Rename it NAME London Presentation e.g. [your name] London Presentation.

Open the London Images folder. This contains the images that you will need to use to improve the presentation. The Notes sections is beneath each slide at the bottom of the screen. Use the scroll bars to find all of the instructions.

Work individually, in silence. I will not be able to show you how to do any of the tasks.

WEEK 7 – 20^th October

8.1 Lesson 7: Environmental Tourist: Getting Grimechester Green – Assessment 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In today’s lesson you will learn how to;

• To assess student’s learning throughout the unit. 

In this assessed activity you will work on behalf of an environmental group, Grimestoppers UK.  They have decided to run a campaign to make people more aware of global warming.  Grimechester people don’t recycle, use too much energy, and drive to work – even when it’s only a five-minute walk!  They want to give people facts about how bad global warming is and what can be done about it, using temperature data for the UK.  They want to make a presentation to make the people of Grimechester aware of what their bad habits are doing to the environment, and how they can get greener.  They also want you to provide charts for the presentation to show how temperatures have changed over time to show that global warming is a reality.  They have found some local weather data in the public library for the last fifty years and also some data from the 1600s, 1700s and 1800s.  They need you to create a plan to show where everything will be placed in the presentation.  They want you to write design directions to show what each slide will contain, and notes on any extras like sounds or pictures if you think they will add to the presentation. 

You will have to work individually, in silence.  I will not be able to show you how to do any of the tasks.  Good luck.  REMEMBER: Save your work regularly as you go along. 

Task 1 Saving a copy of the Local Weather Data. 

1. Open Grimechester Temperature Statistics spreadsheet (Reso7b). 
2. Save this into your NAMED folder. 
3. Add your NAME, FORM / GROUP and DATE to the header (View / Header and footer / Custom Header) and PAGE NUMBERS to the footer (View / Header and footer / Custom Footer).  
4. Call the spreadsheet Grimechester Temperature Statistics. 

Task 2 Analysing Weather Data and Creating Charts using Data for the Last 50 years. 

1. Calculate the average temperature for each year. 
2. Calculate the minimum and maximum temperatures for each year. 
3. Calculate the range (difference between the minimum and maximum) for each year. 
4. Create three charts that show the three data series above (on a separate sheet please). 
5. Add trend lines to the charts. 
6. Annotate the chart to explain the following:
   1. Does the chart show that global warming is happening? 
   2. In what month of what year was the highest temperature recorded? 
   3. In what month of what year was the lowest temperature recorded? 
   4. Does the chart showing range give any useful information? 

Task 3 Analysing Weather Data and Creating Charts using Data for the 1800s, 1700s and 1600s. 

1. Calculate the average temperature for each year. 
2. Create a chart for each of these worksheets to show how the average temperatures have changed over time, and add trend lines on each chart.
3. Add notes in your annotation on Chart 1 to give the following information:
   1. What has happened to the trend lines since the 1600s?
   2. What does this say about global warming?

Continuing with your database projects…

Task 1 – validations

After you have populated your members/clients/customer table with names and addresses you can add the validation to your tables in design view.

In your implementation log you only need to describe in detail each type of validation you might be using once.  E.g. one presence check, one range check, one drop down list etc.

Task 2 – creating your relationships

Now you have designed your relationships you create these in your database

You do not need to cover every single relationship you make in your log, but make sure you talk about one to many joins and enforcing referential integrity if possible.  Ensure that you include a finished screenshot of your relationships showing all the fields and all the joins.

Task 3 – Designing Forms

You need to use forms to add, amend and delete data in your database.  Each of these forms will need designing.

You need to remember that you are creating this system for somebody else and you need to build in as many “user friendly” features as possible.  When you are creating forms for your database you have the opportunity to include the following to help your user input data correctly;

1. Titles on your form
2. Instructions for various fields
3. Combo boxes (drop downs) to aid input – i will show you how to create these
4. Tool tip help
5. Command buttons – for navigating, deleting, adding, closing, printing etc.

Use the form design template to help you which can be found in pupils/Senior Pupils/ICT/GCSE/Coursework/Year 11/Project/2. Design and you can either hand draw your designs or complete them on the computer.  Completing them on the computer makes them easier to alter if you need to.  Have a look at the examples from previous years as well.

Once you have completed your designs you can create your forms and include them in your implementation log – remember, don’t repeat yourself, you only need to show techniques and skills once.  However, ensure that you include screenshots of all your finished forms.

Task 1

Please swap your spreadsheet plan with somebody else then using a post-it note or two jot down any questions you would need to ask your partner about their plan if you were going to implement it.  Use the following list to guide your thoughts;

• the data needed and where it comes from
• the font styles, sizes and colours which you will use
• details of any borders or shading to be used
• alignment of data in cells
• any merged cells and column widths
• formatting of cells (currency, decimal places etc)
• all formulas to be used
• any replication (fill handle) to be used

Task 2

If you complete your hand drawn plans then continue to work on your software justification.

Starter: Please answer at least 3 of the following questions

1. List 4 rights of data subjects under the Data Protection Act
2. List 4 responsibilities of data controllers under the Data Protection Act
3. List 3 different types of printer and explain the main differences between them
4. List 4 functions performed by an operating system
5. Explain the advantages of using a relational database compared to a flat file database
6. List 3 advantages and 1 disadvantage of using a spreadsheet compared to a pencil and paper option

Task 1 – validations
