Using Audacity
This is a quick start guide to using Audacity. You will learn how to record your voice using audacity, save it as project so you can edit it again if necessary and then export the file as an MP3. A further help sheet can be found at http://teachdigital.pbwiki.com/f/audacity-quickstart.pdf
- Open audacity
click on Start – All Programs - Make sure that “microphone” is selected on the input drop down box

- Now you are ready to record your voice but you need something to say. Think of something that you did at the weekend. When you have thought of something, click on the red record button and begin to speak. When you have finished, click on the yellow stop button. To hear what you have recorded, click on the green play button.
- If you want to re-record your story, simply delete the track by clicking on the “x” next to the words “audio track”.
- To save your project (this is so you can edit it later if necessary) simply select File, Save as project… This will save your file as an Audacity project file. You may want to create an Audacity folder to store your work in.
- To export your project as an MP3 (so you can upload it or save it to your MP3 player) you need to select File, Export as MP3. After you have chosen a name for your file you will be asked to locate something called lame_enc.dll, click on yes and then navigate to the following folder Pupils\ICT\Software\Audacity, click on lame_enc.dll and click on open.
- You need to name your MP3, add your name as the artist and choose a name for your album. The genre should be speech.
- You now have an MP3 recording of your voice.
You could use Audacity to do the following;
- Record narrations for powerpoint or movie maker projects
- Record comments on your work or the work of others, upload them to your box.net account and then link them to a comment or post on a blog.
- Record revision notes which you can download onto your MP3 player and listen to at your leisure.
