Work in your groups. Grab a white board, pen and cloth. Jot down some notes on your experience of bogus (unreliable and / or untrustworthy) web pages.

Go to Aggregator site – dig.com – http://digg.com/ or Aggregator site – reddit.com – http://www.reddit.com/ These are aggregator sites which collect together interesting web pages from around the world that have been submitted by members. Choose FIVE featured web sites and evaluate their quality.

TASK 2 – How long does content live on the internet?

Content lives way beyond its intended life span on the internet. This can impact the relevance of web pages found while searching the internet. It might even impact on a person’s long-term future if they post things they might later become embarrassed about!

Work in your groups. Grab a white board, pen and cloth. Geocities was the first giant online community when it was launched in 1994. When it was closed down in 2009, a project archived it so you could see it as it was. Search for “geocities archive project” and have a look around. What has changed and why?

To summarise in 2010, the telegraph reported the following:

“Mr Schmidt (Eric Schmidt of Google) said he believed that every young person will one day be allowed to change their name to distance themselves from embarrassing photographs and material stored on their friends’ social media sites”.

NOTE – Some companies now search for an interviewee online and check their Facebook profiles before hiring them.  Is there anything about you on the web that might cost you a job in the future?

EXTENSION – Body popping

I am going to read a list of statements. Perform one of the following gestures when you have identified the statements read out as:

  • Bias: Lean to the side
  • Fact: Thumbs up
  • Opinion: Palms to mouth as if shouting through a megaphone
  • Bogus: Thumbs down
  • Outdated: Wave the hand as if saying goodbye

Google provides guidance on how to create effective, high quality websites. Search for “Google quality guidelines” and you will find a list of practices it encourages you to avoid. WEBMASTER GUIDELINEShttps://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35769?hl=en#3

Follow the links in the list. Create a Word document called Google quality guidelines. Add your name to the header. Save it into your Unit 6 How the web works folder.

In your document, note down each good practice. Then for each practice, note down whether you have ever visited websites that does NOT follow their advice. Can you remember how you ended up at those websites?

Find tool in Browser. 

Open worksheet 62C Searching web pages. Add your name to the header. Save it into your Unit 6 How the web works folder. Read the instructions 1, 2 and 3, then try to answer question 4.

A browser contains a very useful feature called Find, which locates a web page for the word or phrase which you type into it. It even tells you the number of times that word occurs on the page. This is a very quick and easy way of working out if a web page will help you in your research. If it doesn’t contain appropriate key words, it is unlikely to help you.
